Scientific Investigation Opportunities

Embrace Challenge. Support One Another.

Each age group’s staff members cooperate together and plan themes to promote all areas of development.  Our staff members create and/or modify activities to provide different types of hands-on opportunities, as well as scientific investigation opportunities.  Scientific Investigation opportunities allow students to think of the what, how, and why questions.  These opportunities enhance  student's critical thinking, which in turns teaches students to make judgments and decisions based on points of view, interpret information, and draw conclusions.

Active Learning

Many family members wonder when is it the right time to teach their child letters and numbers, or why is their child not learning letters or numbers yet. It is important for family members to understand that each child progresses at a different rate.  Learning letters and numbers will come easily to the child as the child learns to listen, speak, follow directions and explore his or her surroundings.  Many of our activities indirectly teach letters and numbers by promote learning interests and understanding of basic concepts.  One of the best ways for children to understand letters and numbers is learning through play.

Learning through Play

A child’s job in school is to play.  With the curriculum, our staff understand that it is by listening to children, observing them at play and providing them with appropriate settings and materials that we encourage the successful growth and development of each individual child.  Teachers intentionally plan for the physical environment, social/emotional environment, learning environment, and hands-on experiences.

Play builds each child’s creativity and imagination while helping children learn and understand basic concepts.  From rolling a ball back and forth with a peer to putting on a costume and pretending to be a doctor, the children develop important social skills, motor skills, and a basic understanding of their abilities and knowledge.  Through play, children are able to use hands-on experiences to interact with one another, materials, and the environment around them.

It is important for teachers to engage in play with children.  Since teachers actively engage in play with each child, the teachers foster communication and encourage the children to talk about what they are playing and help build on each child’s social/emotional skills, gross/fine motor skills, and conceptual knowledge.  There are different types of play that can occur.  Types of play are unoccupied, solitary (independent), onlooker, parallel, associative, cooperative, dramatic/fantasy, competitive, and physical play.  These types of play lead to the success in all areas of development.

Educational Field Trips

Throughout the year, our children take field trips to the police station, fire station, library, farm, grocery store and go on community walks to learn about our community and to experience the outdoors, with parental consent.

Outdoor activities provide more opportunities for hands-on experiences and a better understanding of the world around them.  Questions like what, why and how are encouraged and explored.

With formal and informal field trips, we encourage children to increase their interest, knowledge, motivation.  It is an effective way to teach concepts, improve the ability to recognize what other people are thinking or feeling, and participate in activities that occur in an appropriate environment.

Reporting on Individual Progress

All staff members are encouraged to communicate with family members on a daily basis during morning drop off, afternoon pick up, and/or through daily notes.  Family members are always welcome to speak with the teachers regarding any questions they have about their child’s progress.  The school schedules a Parent Teacher Conference at least twice a year to discuss each child's strengths and weaknesses, and ways to help the student progress at home and at school.
